A World-Class Squash Facility

Welcome to the McArthur Squash Center, a 33,000-square-foot facility available to Boar's Head members and hotel guests that boasts 12 singles courts, two doubles courts, and two exhibition courts, all within one single venue. The facility is shared by the University of Virginia NCAA teams and is a remarkable space serving players of all skill levels. The Boar's Head Squash Center is widely considered one of the best squash facilities in the world and plays host to several junior and professional events, including the World Masters Squash Championships in 2018.

Home to UVA's Men's & Women's Squash Teams

McArther Squash Center at Boar's Head Resort is the proud home of the University of Virginia men's and women's squash teams. Their impressive facilities at the resort are some of the best in the world boasting two glass-wall championship courts, numerous traditional singles courts and courts for doubles play. Attendance to their events is free, and their schedules can be viewed on their UVA Athletics web pages.

Head Squash Pro, Stephen O'Dwyer

Stephen is from County Tipperary, Ireland, and has been playing squash since he was nine years old, playing on junior national teams.

With nearly 15 years of US squash instruction under his belt, Stephen has coached in Greenwich, CT, and was a private coach for a family in New Jersey for three years before coming back to Virginia. Stephen has worked with many top-ranked juniors and watched several develop into collegiate players at top-notch schools, including Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Princeton, Brown, UVA, Penn, Cornell, Columbia, Williams, George Washington , Trinity, Middlebury and many more.

Along with squash, Stephen has an extensive background playing rugby and was part of the professional system at Munster rugby in Ireland, playing age grade and academy level.
 

Assistant Squash Pro, Beth Winstanley

Beth Winstanley first represented Wales at age 11, and represented her country under every junior age category. She competed in both individual and team events at the World Junior Women's Squash Championships, and numerous senior and junior European Team championships winning a bronze medal. She also competed and represented Wales as a senior competing as an individual.

Beth has coached in Philadelphia at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. She had great success coaching the girls varsity team in Division 1 of High School Nationals. Most recently, Beth coached in Richmond at The Country Club of Virginia and various schools in the area.

Beth has a Bachelor's degree in Sports Science, and a diploma in Sports Massage. She also has her coaching UK level 2 and is CPR certified.

If you are looking to hone your skills, we have squash pros available on a daily basis for clinics and lessons. Whether you are beginner wanting to learn the game or a well-seasoned player looking to improve your skills for the competitive squash scene, our on-site instructors can cater a lesson for your desire.

Junior Clinics

Beginner Classes:

Mini-Squash (Ages 4-6)
This program is for ages 4-6 and is designed to develop hand-eye coordination, body awareness and introduce youngsters to the sport.

Monday and Wednesday 3.45-4.30pm

Junior A (Ages 7-11)
Emphasis is placed on hand-eye co-ordination, as well as gross motor skills that include, acceleration, twisting, turning, changing direction and stopping. Participating juniors will see improvement in skills that they can take into any other sport they try, not just squash. There is a strong fun element, with relay races, and consecutive hitting competitions always proving popular, as well as team games such as 'squicket" and "squocky".

Monday and Wednesday 4.30-5.30pm

Junior B (Ages 11-17)
Emphasis is on being able to rally and progress to playing full games of squash. Coaching is focused on gaining consistency in hitting both forehands and backhands, as well as being able to serve and serve return without missing. Fun is mostly in the form of competitive, round robin type, match play between the participants

Monday and Wednesday 5.30-6.30pm

Adult Classes:

New Players Clinic
Never tried squash? Our New Players clinic is a great way to learn about squash in a group setting. Our coach will cover the basics, including how to hold the racquet, swing mechanics and the rules of the game. With a primary focus on developing hand-eye coordination, movement and timing, this clinic is a workout for your body and brain. Sign up today and get hooked! Minimum age: 14
 
Advanced Clinic
Designed to elevate your game to the next level as you focus on key tactical and technical instruction. Suitable for high level intermediate and advanced players. Minimum age: 14
 
Ladies Clinic
Cover the essentials, including how to grip the racquet, swing mechanics, the rules, and start to move on to game play. Develop your match play confidence. This clinic is the perfect way to prepare yourself to be ready for matches and therefore be able to participate in our ladder and league.

Youth Mini-Clinics

This program is for ages 4-6 and is designed to develop hand-eye coordination, body awareness and introduce youngsters to the sport.

  • Mondays and Wednesdays 3:45-4:30 p.m.
  • Each session is four weeks.

Cost: $140 per session (eight clinics) or $80 for one session per week (four clinics) or $25 per drop-in.
